Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, head of the Taliban delegation, and Zalmay Khalilzad, U.S. envoy for peace in Afghanistan, shake hands after the signing of the agreement on February 29, 2020 in Doha, Qatar. (Reuters) The agreement was announced in light of talks between Foreign Minister Harsh Vardhan Shringla and Afghan government leaders during a two-day trip to Kabul. It was Mr. Shringla`s first foreign trip after taking on his responsibilities at the end of January. In his meeting with President Ashraf Ghani and other Afghan policymakers, he stressed New Delhi`s commitment to a “strengthened political, economic and development partnership” with Kabul. On Sunday, the two rivals agreed on a new power-sharing agreement that experts say could help lift Afghanistan out of its political crisis, according to media reports. The agreement tells Abdullah to hold future peace talks with rebels who have already signed a pioneering agreement with the United States to pave the way for the withdrawal of U.S.-led foreign forces from Afghanistan. The U.S. Taliban pact was signed on February 29. No further details of the Ghani-Abdullah pact were provided. “The peace agreement reflects a significant step forward by the United States and the Taliban in promoting the last goal of peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan,” he said in a statement. “We hope that this ceasefire will be extended and lasting in order to address the catastrophic humanitarian situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic and pave the way for lasting peace and stability for the Afghan people,” India`s foreign ministry said in a statement.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Raveesh Kumar said India would continue to extend all support to Afghanistan as a coherent neighbour, making it clear that Pakistan-occupied Kashmir was part of India. After months of negotiations, the United States and the Taliban signed a pioneering peace deal in Doha, the capital of Qatar, on Saturday that has virtually cast the curtain on the 18 years of U.S. war in Afghanistan since 2001. India`s ambassador to Qatar P Kumaran was among a large number of diplomats present at the ceremony at which the agreement was put into play. The declaration follows a peace agreement signed between Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and his rival Abdullah Abdullah, which will allow power-sharing between the two and end a long-running power dispute. The Minister of Foreign Affairs also provided India`s support for lasting and inclusive peace and reconciliation, under the leadership of Afghanistan, held by Afghanistan and under Afghan control. “He stressed that a lasting peace in Afghanistan requires an end to terrorism encouraged by the outside world,” the MEA said.
